Gen Z: Ruth 1
So like, back in the day when the judges were running things, there was a major famine. A dude from Bethlehem, Judah, dipped to Moab with his wifey and their two sons.
This guy's name was Elimelech, and his wife was Naomi. Their sons were Mahlon and Chilion, straight outta Bethlehem, Judah. They pulled up in Moab and stayed there.
Then Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, passed away; and she was left with just her two sons.
The sons married Moabite girls; one was Orpah and the other was Ruth. They were living that Moab life for like ten years.
But then both Mahlon and Chilion also died; now Naomi was left alone with her two sons and her husband gone.
So she got up with her daughters-in-law to head back home from Moab, 'cause she heard the Lord was blessing His people with food.
They bounced from where they were, with her two daughters-in-law, and started the trip back to Judah.
Naomi was like to her daughters-in-law, "Yo, go back to your moms' houses. The Lord be nice to you like you were to the dead and me."
"May the Lord help you find chill in your future husbands' houses." Then she hugged them, and they all started crying.
They were like, "Nah, we’re totally coming with you to your people."
Naomi said, "Chill, my daughters: why you wanna roll with me? Do I have any more sons in my womb for you to marry?"
"Seriously, my daughters, go your own way; I'm way too old for a husband. Even if I had hope and got married tonight, and had more sons;"
"Would you wait for them to grow up? Would you stay single just for them? Nah, my daughters; it’s a big yikes for me, 'cause the Lord's hand is against me."
They cried again, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth was like, "Nah, I’m sticking with you."
Naomi said, "Look, your sister-in-law went back to her peeps and her gods; you should go after her."
But Ruth was like, "Don’t tell me to leave you or go back; wherever you go, I’m down to roll. Your people are my people, and your God is my God."
"Where you die, I’ll die; that’s where I’ll be buried. The Lord do serious stuff to me if anything but death separates us."
When Naomi saw Ruth was serious about going with her, she stopped talking to her.
So they both went until they hit Bethlehem. When they got there, the whole city was shook and was like, "Is that Naomi?"
She was like, "Don’t call me Naomi, call me Mara; the Almighty has been savage with me."
"I left full, and the Lord brought me back empty. Why you calling me Naomi when the Lord’s been throwing shade at me?"
So Naomi came back, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, went with her from Moab. They hit Bethlehem right at the start of barley harvest.
